Hulaville Open Mic Night
Time:
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location:
Hulaville Island Café and Company Store. 2720 Camino Capistrano, San Clemente, California 92672, Ph
Description:
In addition to its popular Ukulele Sundays kanikapila (Hawaiian-style jam session), Hulaville Island Café and Company Store now hosts Hulaville Open Mic Night, every Thursday from 6 PM until 8 PM. Jean Navarra, Hulaville owner and former Oahu resident, invites all ukulele, guitar, keyboard, and other musicians, along with singers and hula dancers, to step up to the microphone or take to the dance floor to strut their stuff as a solo, duet, or small group. Here’s the chance to showcase your talents for an appreciative audience. Musicians: An amp and microphone are provided – or bring your own if you prefer. Singers: Can’t play an instrument? No problem, Jean has song books - or bring your own music. Someone will be glad to accompany you. Hula Dancers: Digital (CD, mp3, iPod, etc.) hook-ups are available if you prefer to dance to your own recorded music – or dance along with the live music as it is played. Authentic Hawaiian food along with Jean’s own culinary creations plus tasteful tiki décor in the tradition of the Enchanted Tiki Room provide the perfect setting for island-style tunes - but all types of music are welcomed. Stop-by to play, sing, hula, or just kick back in a tropical setting to relax, listen, and watch. Hulaville Open Mic Night happens every Thursday.

John Cruz - Eugene, OR
Time:
7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute - Eugene OR
Description:
John Cruz has distinguished himself as one of the most talented artists that has ever come from Hawaii. He was named the Best Singer Songwriter by Hawaii Magazine in 2008. This well-earned reputation became even more solidified when he released his long-awaited second album, One of These Days in 2007. It debuted firmly at #1 in Hawaii, #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and #6 on the Billboard World Chart. The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts gave the CD its highest honor in 2008, by awarding John the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Contemporary Album of the Year. It delivers more of the warm, heartfelt melodies and passionate, soulful vocals that John's fans have grown to know and love. Look for album #3 in early 2012

Description:
Come join our weekly kanikapila!
Our aim is to provide an opportunity for people from different playing backgrounds, different levels of ability, and different ukulele clubs - or no playing background at all, no great musical ability, and no club or group affiliation - to come together in a friendly, no-pressure setting to talk-story, share songs and playing tips, and meet new friends.
Pat Enos, a well-known ukulele performer and teacher, will be here most weeks to provide tips and tricks. If you have a song you'd like to teach us or lead us all in, we'd love to learn it. Song books are available at our kanikapila if you need them - or bring your own music - or no music. Actually, that's the most fun of all - playing and singing songs by heart or following along on new songs by watching and listening.
If you're a beginner - or if you don't even own an ukulele yet - you're more than welcome. This is a great place to learn. We usually have some spare ukuleles around so that you can borrow one for the evening and also a complimentary little beginner's learning packet which you can take home with you. Ukulele players are a generous bunch and we love to welcome and teach newcomers.
Hula dancers - and those who would like to learn to do a step or two are also invited! We don't do formal hula instruction here but there is always someone at our meet-ups who would be happy to share some tips to get you started.
We meet every Sunday, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Directions are on our website.

Come join us for an evening of melodious island sounds as Patrick Landeza celebrates the release of his new CD, Ku’u Honua Mele, with musical guests guitarists Kenneth Makuakane and L.T. Smooth, "mandolele" maestro Bill Griffin, and bassist Chris Lau. Patrick spotlights tunes from the CD, a mellifluous melding of Hawaiian roots and originals influenced by Patrick’s California upbringing. "It's traditional Hawaiian music with a Berkeley twist," he says.
A musician, composer, and producer, Patrick is a leading exponent of ki ho'alu, the Hawaiian slack key guitar style that Hawaiian cowboys developed in the 19th century when they loosened their guitar strings (or "slacked" them) for a lower, more resonant sound. Born and raised in Berkeley to Hawai'i-born parents, Patrick studied slack key from masters like George Kuo and the late Ray Kane and Sonny Chillingworth. Today, Patrick is regarded as one of the top slack key performers, as well as someone with the unique ability to build a melodic bridge between California and Hawai'i.
Kenneth and L.T. each perform a short set to open the show. One of Hawaiian music's most prolific composers and producers, Kenneth is the recipient of no fewer than twelve Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, the Hawaii equivalent of the Grammy, and he performs regularly with the multi-award winning group, The Pandanus Club. L.T. spotlights his velvety vocals and lightning-fast guitar licks, as the Kailua resident demonstrates a versatility that incorporates elements of jazz, R&B, and gospel.
