Kiho'alu (Slack Key Guitar) with Hawaii's own JOHN KEAWE Instructor: John Keawe Sat., June 5, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops). Share in John's beautiful perspective of the history of slack key and how he learned and personalized this traditional craft. Learn tunings with a hands-on approach to simple songs, in the same way this art form is traditionally passed on: through telling of stories, listening, sharing, and playing by ear. No tablature or music reading is necessary. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring portable recorders or video cameras for this workshop. Students should be familiar with slack key and maybe already able to play a song or two. John will share more of his perspective of the history of slack key, slanted for the more advanced player. The consummate performer, John has always felt honored to have the opportunity to entertain and share his Aloha with people from around the world. Often, his lovely and graceful wife, Hope, will perform hula while John is performing offering inspiring and beautiful interpretations of his songs. John has also had the privilege of being an instructor on numerous occasions at prestigious slack-key music camps such as the one hosted by his friend and colleague, Keola Beamer. John Keawe continues to leave an indelible imprint in the realm of Hawaiian slackkey guitar music. His music transcends time and is truly an integral part of Hawai`i’s culture and history. John lives on the Big Island of Hawai`I with his wife, Hope and granddaughters at the original homestead of his childhood.
